The Château de Villandry: avant-garde architecture

In 1532, Jean Breton, François I’s finance minister, bought a medieval fortress located near to Tours. Like the sovereign who followed the new architectural techniques of the Renaissance when building in the Val de Loire, Breton embarked on major works to bring the Château de Villandry into the modern times.

The gardens of Villandry: style and substance

The Château has boasted gardens since the Renaissance. In keeping with the Renaissance style in the 16th century, French in the 18th century and transformed into a landscaped park in the 19th century, the gardens of Villandry, which were redesigned by Joachim Carvallo in the early 20th century, are an original creation blending tradition and innovation.
